Building a Foundation of Wisdom: Introducing Trinity Academy

Opening 2026 in Johannesburg, Trinity Christian Academy restores classical Christian education. We prioritize wisdom over skills and character over grades. Join our “Missionary Phase” and help pioneering families build a foundation of truth, goodness, and beauty through the Trivium.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” — Psalm 127:1

In an era where education is often reduced to mere vocational training or standardized testing, many Christian families are asking fundamental questions about the formation of their children’s souls. Is school merely a place to acquire skills for the marketplace, or is it a place to learn how to live well?

We are delighted to introduce Trinity Academy, a new educational initiative in Johannesburg. Scheduled to open its doors in late January or early February 2026, Trinity is not just another private school. It is a return to the roots of Western civilisation—a school standing in the classical Christian tradition, dedicated to the development of wisdom, Christlikeness, and “right loves” in its students.

Below, we outline our philosophy, our unique methodology, and the exciting “Missionary Phase” of our launch.

Why “Trinity”? The Core of Our Identity

The name “Trinity” is not incidental; it summarizes the three core values that drive our existence.

1. Our Beliefs

First, the name identifies our theological foundation. We hold to orthodox Christianity, believing that the true Creator God is eternally existent in the persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We invite families to partner with us who share this conviction, as we believe that a truly Christian education is only possible when Christian conviction underlies the entire curriculum, not just a part of it.

2. Our Goals: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty

Second, the name identifies our goals. We believe a Christ-centered, holistic education educates learners in a different kind of trinity: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.

  • Truth: We want children to discern and recognise truth in a world of relativism.
  • Goodness: We aim for them to embrace and live out Christlike goodness.
  • Beauty: We desire for them to understand and cherish God’s reflected beauty in all of life.

3. Our Methods: The Trivium

Third, the name identifies our methods. We believe education ought to follow the trinity of Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom—classically known as Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric.

The Philosophy: Wisdom Over Skills

Modern secular education often focuses on “training”—giving someone a skill that translates into a career. While Trinity fully intends to equip learners to excel at university and in the workplace, our primary focus is not vocational training.

Our philosophy prioritizes wisdom. Education seeks to shape a mind to think, reason, and persuade. It dispels ignorance and shapes a mind to see God, the world, and the self as God does.

Furthermore, we prioritize character over academic achievement. While academic excellence is encouraged as a way of doing all things “heartily, as to the Lord” , we know there is life outside of report cards. Education is more than the transfer of facts from one brain to another; it is the shaping of hearts through exposure and example.

How We Teach: The Three Stages of the Trivium

Classical Christian education is distinct in its methodology. We do not view children as miniature adults, but respect their natural developmental stages. We use the Trivium—the “three ways”—to guide our teaching.

The Grammar Stage (Knowledge)

  • Ages: Roughly 5–11 years old.
  • Focus: Gathering facts and basic ideas.
  • Methodology: Young children naturally enjoy repetition, songs, and chants. Contrary to secular educational theories, “rote learning” is not inferior at this stage; children thrive on it.
  • Application: In history, they learn dates and events; in math, multiplication tables; in Latin, vocabulary. They are building the “grammar” of knowledge.

The Logic Stage (Understanding)

  • Ages: Roughly 12–14 years old.
  • Focus: Weighing facts and relating them to one another.
  • Methodology: Middle school students enjoy arguing and disputing as they try to make sense of the world. We channel this by teaching them to order, arrange, judge, compare, and contrast.
  • Application: They move beyond “what happened?” to “why did it happen?” and “was it good?”. This stage has a strongly ethical content, making it vital that Christians with biblical ethics guide the process.

The Rhetoric Stage (Wisdom)

  • Ages: Roughly 15–18 years old.
  • Focus: Applying knowledge and understanding to life.
  • Methodology: High school students are conscious of their appearance and want to present themselves to the world. We teach them to present their ideas winsomely and persuasively.
  • Application: Students write essays arguing for historical acts, critique literature, and defend the faith through apologetics.

Unique Features of Our Curriculum

To support this classical structure, Trinity employs specific tools that are often absent in modern schools.

1. The Teaching of Latin

We begin Latin classes in the third grade. Why? Because Christians are a “people of the book” who treasure language. Latin acts as a fountainhead to languages like English, greatly increasing precision in grammar and improving writing style.

2. The Great Books

We expose learners to the “Great Ideas” discussed by the contributors to Western Civilisation for centuries. By entering this “Great Conversation,” students gain “Cultural Literacy”—the background information required to understand the metaphors, idioms, and history that shape sophisticated public discourse.

3. A Christian Worldview

Every subject is taught from a distinctively Christian perspective. As J. Gresham Machen noted, the meaning of truth—even in mathematics—seems entirely different to the Christian than to the non-Christian.

Where We Are Now: The Missionary Phase

Building a school of this magnitude is a journey. We view the project in three distinct phases, and we are currently launching Phase 1, which we call the “Missionary Phase”.

What is the Missionary Phase?

  • Pioneering Spirit: This phase begins when pioneering families start combined classes. It is best described as a co-operation of homeschooling families, though it is open to pupils outside these families as resources allow.
  • Staffing: We rely on “missionary” teachers—faithful individuals, often parents of children in the school, who are willing to serve the vision.
  • Financials: The budget for Phase 1 assumes a fee of roughly R5000 per child per month. Without external funding, this phase requires approximately 18 pupils to be self-supporting.
  • Registration: While operating, we are simultaneously building the policies and infrastructure required for formal registration with the Gauteng Department of Education. In the interim, we rely on the legal support provided by the Pestalozzi Trust.

The Future: Phases 2 and 3

We are planting seeds now for a harvest later.

  • Phase 2: Begins when we employ a qualified Principal to take over development roles. This moves the school from “amateur” to “professional,” requiring around 49 pupils.
  • Phase 3: The school offers Grade R to Grade 12 entirely “in-house,” with significant premises and a minimum of 9 qualified teachers.

Transitioning from Homeschooling

Many of our founding families come from a homeschooling background. If you are considering the shift from homeschooling to Trinity, know that we understand the transition.

The biggest difference your child may notice is the structure—school naturally has more “rules” than home. Preparation is key:

  1. Practice routines: Raising hands, finishing work in a set time, and taking tests without assistance.
  2. Expect fatigue: In the beginning, children may come home tired. This passes quickly.
  3. Independence: Your child will become more independent. While sometimes painful for parents, this is a good and normal part of maturation.

We recommend transitioning at natural entry points if possible—such as Grade 1, Grade 3 (when Latin begins), or Grade 7 (Logic stage).

Join the Pioneers

We are looking for faithful, pioneering families willing to work in this project. We are looking for those who understand that success is measured by faithfulness to God, which produces obedience, diligence, and the pursuit of truth.

Trinity Christian Academy is not broadly Christian; it is specifically Christian. We invite families who are ready to submit to this philosophy to join us in building a legacy of wisdom for the next generation.

How can you help?

  • Pray: For the Lord to build the house.
  • Contribute: We need legal assistance, donations, premises, and equipment (whiteboards, desks, books).
  • Apply: If you are a current or aspiring homeschooling family, or a teacher who embraces classical education, please reach out.

We are rolling up our sleeves. Will you join us?
